Chapter 8

The courtroom was quiet and cold.
Mark sat across from me, looking confident.
His lawyer tried to paint me as unstable, bitter, unreasonable.
Then it was my turn to speak.
I stood up and told the story.
From the moment Leo’s fever spiked.
To the eighteen calls.
To his last whisper for Daddy.
I showed the logs.
The timestamps.
The photos.
Elena testified next.
She told the court exactly what Mark had said to her.
How he’d lied about our marriage.
How he’d been with her the whole time.
Then the lawyer showed the bank records.
Mark’s face crumbled.
His confident posture melted away.
He tried to argue.
He tried to make excuses.
But the evidence was too clear.
Too overwhelming.
He’d lied to everyone.
He’d chosen his own comfort over his dying son.
Over me.
The judge looked at Mark with deep disappointment.
“You are not just a bad husband,” the judge said. “You are a man who abandoned his own child when he needed you most. You do not deserve to be trusted with anything.”
The decision came fast.
Mark lost all claim to our assets.
He had to pay back every cent he’d stolen.
He was ordered to pay damages for the pain he’d caused.
And his name was officially tied to what he’d done.
When the hearing ended, Mark didn’t look at me.
He just walked out, head down, defeated.

I stood there in the empty room.
The heavy weight I’d carried for weeks finally lifted.
