Chapter 6

Two weeks later, I got a message from someone I never expected.
It was the other woman.
Her name was Elena.
“I need to talk to you,” she wrote. “I just found out what happened. I had no idea. Please, give me five minutes.”
I was furious.
Part of me wanted to delete the message and never speak to her.
But another part wanted answers.
So I agreed to meet her at a quiet café.
Elena looked nervous, ashamed.
“I’m so sorry,” she said before I even sat down. “Mark told me you were already separated. That you barely spoke. That Leo was fine, staying with relatives.”
I stared at her.
“He told you all that?”
“Every word. He said he was planning to file for divorce soon. I never would have… I never would have been with him if I knew the truth.”
She pulled out her phone and showed me their messages.
Mark had lied to her just as much as he’d lied to me.
He’d played us both.
“I feel terrible,” Elena said, tears spilling over. “I had no idea he was ignoring your calls. I thought he was at work that night. He told me he’d finished early and just wanted to relax.”
My anger softened into something else.
She wasn’t the villain here.
Mark was.
“He’s good at lying,” I said quietly. “He’s had years of practice.”
Elena nodded.
“I want to help you. I’ll testify. I’ll show everyone exactly what he told me. I won’t let him blame you for this.”
For the first time since Leo died, I felt like I wasn’t fighting alone.

Two people he’d betrayed were now standing together.
Mark had no idea how much was about to fall apart.
