The Freezing of the Robles Empire

Sofia woke up just after noon.

Her eyes fluttered open slowly, and the first thing she did was reach for my hand. When she saw Alexander standing near the window, she didn’t look surprised. She just looked tired.

“Mom,” she whispered, her voice hoarse. “Did they really try to take the condo?”

I sat on the edge of the bed and smoothed her hair. “Yes, baby. But they won’t anymore.”

She turned her head slightly to look at Alexander. “You came.”

“I came,” he said simply.

Sofia was quiet for a moment. Then she said something that made both of us go still.

“I knew they were lying about the prenup. I heard Carmen talking to Javier last week on the phone. She said once the paperwork was signed, they could sell the condo and split the money before you found out. She called me… a spoiled little obstacle.”

Alexander’s jaw tightened, but he stayed silent.

I squeezed Sofia’s hand. “Why didn’t you tell me?”

“I thought I could handle it,” she said. “I didn’t want you to worry. And I didn’t want Dad to think I was weak.”

Alexander finally spoke. His voice was rougher than usual.

“You are not weak, Sofia. You never have been.”

She looked at him for a long moment, then nodded once, as if accepting something she had been waiting years to hear.

Alexander stepped closer to the bed.

“I’m going to make sure they never come near you again,” he said. “But I need you to trust me. Can you do that?”

Sofia studied his face. Then she gave the smallest smile.

“I already do,” she said. “That’s why I called you last night instead of the police.”

I stared at her. “You called him?”

Sofia nodded. “I knew Mom would come. But I also knew that if Carmen was willing to hit me over a condo, she wouldn’t stop unless someone made her stop. Dad is the only person I know who can actually do that.”

Alexander looked at me across the bed. Something passed between us that didn’t need words.
