Chapter 4 - The Divorce We Never Finished

That evening, after Sofia fell back asleep, Alexander and I stepped out into the private hallway.

We hadn’t been alone like this in years.

He leaned against the wall and loosened his tie for the first time all day.

“You should have told me she was in trouble,” he said quietly. “Even if you hate me, you should have told me.”

“I don’t hate you,” I said. “I just stopped trusting you a long time ago.”

He nodded, accepting it. “Fair.”

We stood in silence for a while.

Then I asked the question I had been avoiding since last night.

“Why did you really come when she called?”

Alexander looked down the empty hallway.

“Because she’s ours,” he said. “And because I made a promise to myself the day we signed those divorce papers that if she ever needed me, I would be there. No matter what you thought of me.”

I studied his face. The same sharp lines, the same cold eyes that could turn warm only for our daughter.

“You’ve changed,” I said.

“No,” he replied. “I just stopped pretending I didn’t care.”

Before I could answer, my phone rang. It was our investigator again.

“Carmen just tried to contact one of Alexander’s old business rivals in Singapore. She’s offering them information on Bennett Holdings in exchange for protection and money.”

Alexander’s expression turned to ice.

“She’s getting desperate,” I said.

“She’s getting dangerous,” he corrected. “Desperate people make mistakes. Dangerous people make plans.”

He pushed off the wall.

“I need to go handle this. Stay with Sofia. I’ll be back before morning.”

As he walked away, I realized something I hadn’t wanted to admit.

For the first time since our divorce, I wasn’t facing this alone.

And that terrified me almost as much as Carmen did.
