Chapter 2 - The Call I Never Wanted to Make
I immediately reached for my phone.
Sofia tried to stop me.
“Mom… Dad won’t help us.”
She hadn’t spoken to her father in years. Neither had I. Our divorce had ended every conversation between us. But one thing had never changed.
He loved his daughter.
I dialed the number anyway.
After several rings, a familiar voice answered.
“Elena?”
I took a deep breath.
“Your daughter came home beaten on her wedding night.”
Silence.
Then his voice became colder than I’d ever heard it.
“Where is she?”
“At my apartment.”
“Send me the address.”
He hung up before I could say another word.
Half an hour later, someone knocked on the door.
When I opened it, Alexander stood there wearing yesterday’s clothes, his face pale with exhaustion. The moment he saw Sofia covered in bruises on the couch, he rushed across the room. He dropped to his knees beside her.
“My little girl…”
Sofia slowly opened her eyes.
“Dad…”
Alexander gently touched the bruises on her arm. His expression never changed. He didn’t cry. He didn’t yell. He simply looked at the injuries in complete silence.
And in that moment, I realized something.
Carmen believed she had intimidated a frightened young bride into silence.
What she didn’t realize was that she had just declared war on the wrong family.
And before the honeymoon was over, everything she had built was about to come crashing down.
Alexander finally looked up at me. His eyes were dark with something I hadn’t seen in years.
“Tell me everything,” he said quietly.
So I did.
When I finished, he stood up and walked to the window. He stared out at the city lights for a long time without speaking.
Then he turned around.
“Pack a bag for both of you,” he said. “We’re not staying here.”
Sofia looked at him weakly. “Where are we going?”
