Chapter 6 - Carmen’s Web of Lies

Over the next two days, Alexander’s investigators uncovered everything.

Carmen had been hiding massive debts for years. She had borrowed against the law firm using fake client accounts. When those started falling apart, she targeted Sofia’s condo as her last lifeline.

But that wasn’t the worst part.

The worst part was Javier.

He had known about his mother’s plan from the beginning. He had even helped her pressure Sofia into the marriage faster, hoping the condo would become joint property after the wedding.

Sofia cried when she found out.

“I really thought he loved me,” she whispered.

I held her while she cried.

Alexander stood by the window, his back to us, but I could see the tension in his shoulders.

When Sofia finally calmed down, he turned around.

“You don’t have to decide anything right now,” he told her. “But I want you to know something. You are not trapped. Not with him. Not with any of them.”

Sofia wiped her eyes.

“I want a divorce,” she said quietly. “I never want to see any of them again.”

Alexander nodded.

“Then that’s what you’ll get. And I’ll make sure you get it on your terms.”

That night, Carmen tried one last desperate move.

She sent Javier to our building.

He stood outside, calling Sofia’s name through the intercom, begging her to come down and talk.

Alexander went downstairs alone.

I don’t know what he said to Javier.

But when he came back up twenty minutes later, Javier was gone.

And Alexander’s knuckles were slightly bruised.
