Chapter 10 - What We Built After the Fire

Three months later, Sofia’s divorce was finalized.

She kept the condo. She kept her peace. And she kept us — her mother and her father — in her life in a way that finally felt healthy.

We didn’t become one big happy family. Alexander and I never got back together. But we learned how to stand beside each other for our daughter without the old bitterness.

Sofia moved back into her condo, but she changed the locks and added better security. She also started therapy. Some days were hard. Some nights she still had nightmares. But she was healing.

One evening, the three of us had dinner at her place.

After we ate, Sofia looked at both of us.

“I want to say something,” she said. “I know what happened on my wedding night was horrible. But it also showed me who really loves me. And who never did.”

She looked at Alexander.

“Thank you for coming when I needed you. Even after all these years.”

Then she looked at me.

“And thank you for never giving up on me, even when I chose the wrong person.”

I reached over and took her hand.

Alexander did the same.

Sofia smiled — a real, genuine smile.

“I don’t know what the future looks like yet,” she said. “But I know I’m not facing it alone anymore.”

Later that night, after Alexander left, Sofia and I sat on her balcony.

She looked out at the city lights.

“Mom,” she said quietly. “Do you think we’ll be okay?”

I looked at my daughter — bruised but unbroken, hurt but healing, and finally free.

“Yes,” I said. “We already are.”

And for the first time since that terrible night, I truly believed it.
