Chapter 5 - The Condo They Wanted So Badly

Later that afternoon, Sofia woke up and joined us in the living room. She was still in pain, but she looked stronger than last night.

Alexander made her tea and sat across from her.

“I need to ask you something,” he said gently. “Why does Carmen want your condo so badly? It’s valuable, but not enough to risk everything she’s built.”

Sofia looked down at her hands.

“Javier told me something a few weeks ago. He said his family was in trouble. Big trouble. They had debts. Bad ones. The kind that could destroy the firm. He said if I transferred the condo into both our names, they could use it as collateral to borrow more money and save the business.”

She looked up at us.

“I told him no. I told him that condo was the only thing my real father ever gave me, and I wasn’t going to risk it for his mother’s mistakes.”

Alexander and I exchanged a look.

Carmen hadn’t just wanted the condo for greed.

She had needed it to survive.

And when Sofia refused, she decided to take it by force.

Alexander stood up.

“Now we know why she was desperate,” he said. “And desperate people make mistakes.”

He looked at Sofia.

“I’m going to make sure you keep that condo. And I’m going to make sure Carmen loses everything she tried to protect.”

Sofia reached out and took his hand.

“Dad… I don’t want you to go to jail for this.”

Alexander smiled for the first time since he arrived.

“Don’t worry, little girl. I’m not going to touch her with my hands.”

He glanced at me.

“I’m going to destroy her with paper. And by the time I’m finished, she’ll wish I had only used my hands.”
