Chapter 8 - Javier’s True Colors

Javier tried to contact Sofia one more time.
This time, he sent a long message.
He said he was sorry. He said his mother had forced him. He said he still loved her and wanted to fix things.
Sofia showed me the message.
Then she deleted it without replying.
Later that night, she looked at me and Alexander.
“I don’t want to hear from him ever again,” she said. “Not even an apology. I just want to be free.”
Alexander nodded.
“You will be.”
Two days later, Javier was arrested.
Not for what he did to Sofia — though that case was still building — but for helping his mother commit fraud against several clients. Carmen had used him to move money through the firm, and the evidence Alexander’s team found was overwhelming.
When Sofia heard the news, she didn’t cry.
She just looked relieved.
“I keep thinking I should feel sad,” she said. “But I don’t. I just feel… free.”

Alexander looked at her with something like pride.
“That’s because you are,” he said. “And you’re never going back.”
