Chapter 12 - How They Spent My Money

While the police were investigating, more information started coming out.
One of my cousins, who worked at the same bank as my father, reached out to me privately. She had seen some of the transactions and felt guilty for staying silent all these years.
She told me how my parents had used the money.
Part of it went to paying off Ethan’s credit card debt.
Another large portion was used to renovate their house and buy a new car.
Some of it was even used to take a vacation to Europe — the same summer I had to work two part-time jobs just to afford textbooks.
I sat on my bed after the call, feeling sick.
They hadn’t just stolen from me.
They had used my future to fund their lifestyle and cover Ethan’s mistakes.
That evening, I sat with Chloe and showed her the messages from my cousin.
She read them in silence.
Then she said, “They really saw you as nothing more than a source of money.”
I nodded.
“For years, I kept trying to earn their love,” I said quietly. “I studied harder. I worked more. I thought if I just succeeded enough, they would finally be proud of me. But they never saw me as their daughter. They only saw me as a wallet.”
Chloe looked at me with sad but firm eyes.
“You don’t need their love anymore, Mia. You’ve already proven you can succeed without them. Now it’s time to let them face what they did.”
I looked at my diploma sitting on the shelf.
She was right.

I had already won.
Now, I just needed to make sure they didn’t get away with it.
