Chapter 20 - The Day My Scholarship Was Returned

Three weeks later, I received official news from the university.
My original scholarship had been reinstated.
Not only that — the financial aid office had worked with the Department of Education to have the fraudulent loans removed from my name. The debt that had been hanging over me for years was finally gone.
When I read the email, I sat on my bed and cried.
Not because I was sad.
But because, for the first time in four years, I felt truly free.
Later that day, Chloe came over with ice cream to celebrate.
“You did it,” she said, smiling. “You actually did it.”
I wiped my eyes and laughed.
“I didn’t do it alone,” I said. “I had help. From you. From the university. From the police. From finally deciding that I deserved better.”
Chloe raised her spoon like a toast.
“To finally getting what was always yours.”
I smiled and raised mine.
That night, after Chloe left, I stood in front of the mirror and looked at myself for a long time.
The girl who had been slapped at graduation was still there.
But she was no longer afraid.
She was no longer silent.
And she was no longer carrying the weight of her parents’ lies.

For the first time in a very long time, I felt like I could finally start living my life — not the one they tried to force on me, but the one I had fought for.
And it felt better than I ever imagined.
