Chapter 22 - The Court Hearing

Two months after graduation, my parents finally had their first court hearing.
I didn’t go.
I didn’t want to see them. I didn’t want to hear their excuses or watch them lie under oath. Instead, I stayed home with Chloe and waited for updates from Detective Ramirez.
The hearing didn’t last long.
My mother had already confessed to forging some of the documents. My father tried to deny everything, but the evidence was overwhelming. The judge ordered both of them to surrender their passports and placed strict bail conditions on them.
When Detective Ramirez called me afterward, he sounded satisfied.
“They’re not going anywhere,” he said. “And with your brother’s testimony, the case is getting stronger every day.”
I sat on the couch after the call, staring out the window.
For four years, my parents had controlled my life through fear and manipulation.
Now, they were the ones being controlled — by the law, by evidence, and by the truth I had finally spoken.
Chloe looked at me from across the room.
“How do you feel?” she asked.
I thought about it.
“Relieved,” I said. “But also… sad. Not for them. But for the family I never really had.”
Chloe nodded.
“You’re allowed to feel both.”
I looked down at my hands.
“I just want this to be over,” I said quietly. “I want to move on with my life without them hanging over me.”
Chloe smiled gently.
“You’re already moving on, Mia. Every day you choose not to let them control you anymore, you’re moving forward.”
I nodded.
She was right.

The court case was still ongoing.
But in my heart, I had already started letting them go.
