Chapter 9 - What My Mother Really Said

That evening, my mother called me.
I almost didn’t answer, but something made me pick up.
“Mia,” she said, her voice shaking with anger, “how could you do this to us? Do you have any idea what you’ve done? You’ve humiliated this entire family in front of everyone!”
I stayed silent for a moment.
Then I said, “You humiliated me first. For four years.”
She laughed bitterly.
“You always were dramatic. We gave you everything growing up. And this is how you repay us? By lying in front of hundreds of people?”
I felt something cold settle in my chest.
“You didn’t give me everything,” I said. “You gave Ethan everything. You gave him tutors, money, support. You gave me silence and lies. You stole my future and then called me a failure when I still succeeded.”
My mother’s voice turned sharp.
“You think you’re so smart now? You think exposing us will make you happy? You’re still alone. You still have no one.”
I closed my eyes.
“I have myself,” I said. “And that’s more than I had when I was living under your roof.”
She was quiet for a few seconds.
Then she said something that made my blood run cold.
“You’re going to regret this, Mia. Mark my words.”
She hung up.
I sat on my bed, staring at the phone in my hand.
For the first time, I wasn’t scared of her threat.
I was angry.
Because even now, after everything, she still couldn’t admit what they did wrong.

She could only threaten.
And I was done being afraid of their threats.
