Ethan tried to contact me again, this time through text.

Ethan: Mia, please talk to me. Mom and Dad are blaming me for everything. They told the police I knew about the loans from the beginning. I need your help.

I stared at the message for a long time.

Then I replied:

Me: You knew they were stealing from me and you stayed silent. You benefited from the money they took. I don’t owe you anything.

He replied almost immediately.

Ethan: I was scared of them too. You don’t understand what it was like.

I felt anger rise in my chest.

Me: I understand perfectly. You were scared, so you let them destroy me instead. That’s not fear. That’s selfishness.

He didn’t reply after that.

Later that week, Detective Ramirez called me.

“Your brother has been cooperating with the investigation,” he said. “He admitted that he knew about the scholarship money being used for his debts. He’s willing to testify against your parents in exchange for reduced charges against him.”

I was quiet for a moment.

“Do you believe him?” I asked.

“I think he’s trying to save himself,” Detective Ramirez replied honestly. “But his testimony is still useful. Your parents are running out of options.”

After the call, I sat on the couch and thought about my brother.

For years, I had envied him. I thought he was the lucky one — the one who was loved, supported, and protected.

But now I realized something.

Ethan had also been trapped.

Just in a different way.

He had been raised to believe he was special, but only if he stayed obedient. The moment things fell apart, our parents were ready to throw him under the bus too.

I didn’t feel sorry for him.

But I also didn’t feel the same burning hatred I once did.
