Chapter 28 - The Degree That Actually Meant Something

One year after graduation, I attended a small alumni event at my university.

I almost didn’t go. But something made me put on a nice dress and show up.

When I walked into the room, a few people recognized me from the graduation video that had gone viral. Some came up to shake my hand. Others just smiled and nodded.

During the event, the university president gave a short speech. At one point, he mentioned “students who overcame extraordinary challenges to earn their degrees.”

He didn’t say my name.

But when he finished speaking, he looked directly at me and nodded.

I nodded back.

Later that night, I stood outside the venue holding my diploma case.

I had carried this degree through so much pain. There were times I almost gave up. Times I believed my parents when they said I didn’t deserve it.

But I had earned it.

Not just the classes and the exams.

I had earned it by surviving.

By refusing to stay quiet.

By choosing myself when no one else would.

I held the diploma a little tighter.

This wasn’t just a piece of paper anymore.

It was proof.

May you like

Proof that I had survived what they did to me.

And proof that I was finally free.
