Chapter 23 - What My Parents Lost

By the time the investigation was fully complete, my parents had lost almost everything.

Their bank accounts were frozen.

The house was at risk of being seized to pay back the stolen money.

My father lost his job after his employer found out about the charges.

My mother’s reputation in her social circle was completely destroyed.

But the worst part for them wasn’t the money or the legal trouble.

It was the silence.

Most of our relatives stopped talking to them. Some even publicly distanced themselves. The same people who used to praise them for being “good parents” now avoided them completely.

One afternoon, I received a message from my grandmother — my father’s mother.

Grandma: Your father called me today. He asked me for money. I told him no. I also told him I’m ashamed to call him my son.

I stared at the message for a long time before replying.

Me: Thank you for believing me.

Grandma: I should have believed you sooner. I’m sorry.

That message meant more to me than I expected.

Because even though my parents had lost everything, the thing that hurt them the most was losing the image they had worked so hard to protect.

They had spent years pretending to be a perfect family.

Now, everyone knew the truth.

And they had no one left to blame but themselves.
