Chapter 19 - The Evidence That Couldn’t Be Denied

By the end of the week, the case against my parents had become very strong.

Detective Ramirez called me with an update.

“We have enough evidence now to move forward with charges,” he said. “Identity theft, fraud, theft of government funds, and possibly more. Your mother has already confessed to signing some of the documents. Your father is still denying everything, but the paper trail is too strong.”

I sat on my bed, phone pressed to my ear.

“What about Ethan?” I asked.

“We’re still investigating his involvement. It looks like he benefited from the money but didn’t directly participate in the forgery. We’ll see what the prosecutor decides.”

After the call, I felt strangely calm.

For four years, I had lived in fear of my parents. I had carried the weight of their lies and their theft. I had doubted myself constantly.

But now, the evidence was undeniable.

They couldn’t twist the story anymore.

They couldn’t call me dramatic or crazy.

The documents, the bank records, the forged signatures, and even my mother’s own confession were all there.

I looked at my diploma on the shelf.

I had earned that degree despite everything they did to stop me.

And soon, they would have to answer for what they did.
