Chapter 15 - The Police Arrive

Three days later, I received a call from Detective Ramirez.

“We’ve brought your parents in for questioning,” he said. “Both of them are currently at the station.”

I sat up straight.

“What happens now?” I asked.

“We’re going to question them separately. Your mother is being very defensive. Your father is trying to shift blame onto your brother. We’ll keep you updated.”

That evening, I got another call.

This time, it was from my mother.

She was crying.

“Mia, please,” she sobbed. “They’re saying we could go to jail. You have to tell them to stop. We’re still your family!”

I stayed silent for a few seconds.

Then I said, “You stopped being my family the day you stole from me and lied about it for four years.”

She kept crying.

“You’re destroying us,” she said.

“No,” I replied. “You destroyed yourselves. I’m just refusing to stay quiet anymore.”

I hung up.

Ten minutes later, Detective Ramirez called again.

“Your mother just admitted during questioning that she signed the loan documents,” he said. “She claims your father pressured her, but she confessed.”

I closed my eyes.

After four long years, the truth was finally coming out.

Not because they felt guilty.

But because they were finally being forced to face it.

And for the first time, I allowed myself to feel a small sense of relief.

They were no longer in control.

I was.
