5 - The Night My Parents Lost Their Masks

By evening, the story had already spread across campus and social media.

Videos of my father slapping me were everywhere. So were clips of me speaking on stage. The comments were brutal — not toward me, but toward my parents.

That night, I went back to my apartment with Chloe. My phone wouldn’t stop buzzing.

Relatives I hadn’t spoken to in years were suddenly messaging me.

Some were shocked. Some were defensive. Some were finally admitting they had always suspected something was wrong.

One message stood out.

It was from my aunt — my mother’s sister.

Aunt: I always wondered why they never posted about your graduation. I’m so sorry, Mia. I should have asked more questions.

I didn’t reply yet.

Instead, I sat on the couch and finally let myself feel everything.

The sting on my cheek.

The humiliation of being slapped in front of everyone.

The exhaustion of carrying this secret for four years.

Chloe sat beside me and handed me a glass of water.

“You did it,” she said. “You finally told the truth.”

I nodded.

“But it’s not over,” I said quietly. “They’re not going to let this go easily.”

Chloe looked at me.

“Then we make sure they can’t hurt you anymore.”

I looked down at my diploma on the coffee table.

For the first time in four years, I actually felt like it belonged to me.

And I was ready to fight to keep it.
