Chapter 26 - Rebuilding From Nothing
Starting over wasn’t glamorous.
I had almost no savings. My credit was still recovering from the damage my parents had done. And I had to work two jobs while looking for better opportunities.
But every small step felt like freedom.
I found a small apartment closer to the city. It was tiny, but it was mine. No one could take it away from me. No one could lie about it. No one could use it against me.
I started applying for jobs in my field. At first, I got a lot of rejections. But I kept going.
One afternoon, I got a call for an interview.
When I walked into the office, the hiring manager smiled and said, “I saw what happened at your graduation. I’m impressed by how you handled everything.”
I was surprised.
“You saw that?”
He nodded.
“Anyone who can stand up for themselves like that under that kind of pressure is someone I want on my team.”
I got the job two days later.
