Chapter 13 - The Relatives Who Finally Believed Me

As the investigation became public, more relatives started reaching out.

Some were ashamed. Some were angry at my parents. And some were finally admitting that they had always felt something was wrong but never said anything.

One aunt sent me a long message:

“I always wondered why they never came to your high school graduation. And why they never posted about your college acceptance. I should have asked more questions. I’m sorry I didn’t.”

Another cousin called me crying.

“I feel so guilty,” she said. “Your mom used to complain about you all the time. She made it sound like you were ungrateful and difficult. I believed her. I’m so sorry, Mia.”

I didn’t know what to say to most of them.

Part of me was angry that it took public humiliation and police involvement for them to believe me. But another part of me was just tired.

That night, I wrote a simple reply to the relatives who had reached out:

“Thank you for finally believing me. I don’t need anything from you except honesty. Please don’t defend them. That’s all I ask.”

Most of them didn’t reply.

But one did.

My grandmother — my father’s mother — sent me a short message:

“I’m ashamed of my son. What he did to you is unforgivable. If you ever need anything, I’m here.”

I stared at the message for a long time.

Out of everyone, she was the only one who had never made excuses.

And for the first time in years, I felt like I still had one person left in the family who saw me as human.
